Disaster Resilience Apps
In 2011, the Council of Australian Governments adopted the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience. The Strategy includes steps to improve our understanding of the risk of natural disasters, educating people of these risks and improving the methods of communicating to the community so that they can make informed decisions about their options when faced with natural disasters.
The Hon Robert McClelland MP, Minister for Emergency Management announced that in December 2011 his Department released the free DisasterWatch phone app to improve access to national disaster information via mobile services.
"The DisasterWatch app contains news and information about disaster events in Australia via direct feeds from the agency sources in the States and Territories and nationally.
While information is refreshed from sources every 15 minutes to ensure the latest possible information is available, it is important to note that the app does not provide direct emergency warnings to users."
