CHANNEL FIRE MANAGEMENT AREA COMMITTEE
Fire Services legislation prescribes that Local Government foster Fire Area Management Committees comprising key local Fire Brigades, Parks and Wildlife, Forestry and Council Officers.
Kingborough's involvement in Fire management has become clearly focused since the disastrous 1967 "Black Tuesday" disaster. Prior to "Black Tuesday", Kingborough had no formal Fire Brigade organisation. As a consequence of lack of resources, fire management planning and the disastrous conditions prevailing at the time, consequential losses were horrendous and indeed nearly 95% of the municipal land mass was affected by the bushfires.
Today, the Channel Fire Management Committee advises the Tasmanian Fire Commission on the management and operations of a comprehensive network of local volunteer fire brigades and support services extending through the area between Bonnet Hill - Summerleas - Sandfly - Lower Longley in the north to South Bruny - Gordon - Cygnet - Wattle Grove in the south.
