Green Waste Collection Service

The recommendation to implement a green waste service prompted a lot of debate among councillors at the Council Meeting on Monday, 12 August. The result of the decision means that council will not implement a green waste collection service in 2019/20.

Concerns included the cost of the service, and the lack of adequate opt-out provisions and downstream processing.

The Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter “In this environment of low wages growth and increases in costs of living now is not the time to add an increase of $80 onto Kingborough families.”

“We know this decision will be disappointing to some in the community, particularly those who took the time to complete our surveys. However, Kingborough is now going to focus on its intention to work with other Greater Hobart councils on a regional solution for a Food Organic and Green Organic collection and processing service.

“This will allow for a thorough investigation on both suggested services and how they will be processed in Southern Tasmania.”

Council will continue to offer two free green waste weekends at the Barretta Waste Management Facility each year, while we explore alternative options.
