Recycling in Kingborough

Kingborough Council diverted 9,210 tonnes of waste from landfill through recycling, resale, and composting over the 2024/25 financial year.

Mayor Paula Wriedt said reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill remains a key priority for Council.

“Council has a number of programs aimed at reducing landfill, including FOGO (Food Organic and Garden Organics), which diverted 2,652 tonnes of organic waste through the kerbside FOGO service,” Cr Wriedt said.

“With approximately 60 per cent of the average household bin made up of food and garden waste, FOGO has been an important tool in reducing landfill.

“This is a huge benefit to our environment, helping to reduce our community’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“Council also introduced a trial of the Soft Plastic Recycling Program, with a collection point at the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre.

“During the last financial year, the community diverted over 48,000 litres of engine oil, 23 tonnes of paint, and 37 tonnes of television and computer e-waste through Council services.

“A new ‘difficult-to-recycle items’ unit was recently installed at the Kingborough Sports Centre, collecting items such as batteries, light bulbs, x-rays, coffee pods, small e-waste, toner cartridges, and more.

“Together with the unit located at the Kingborough Council Civic Centre, these recycling stations have helped divert a significant amount of waste from landfill, including:

  • 872 kg of coffee pods (over 11,500 capsules)
  • 349 kg of household batteries
  • 345 kg of small e-waste
  • 165 kg of books and magazines
  • 150 kg of x-rays
  • 150 kg of printer cartridges
  • 71 kg of mobile phones
  • 43 kg of light globes

“All of these items were recovered and recycled, saving money and reducing the environmental burden of additional landfill waste.

“Well done, Kingborough, let’s keep up the great work and recycle even more,” said Cr Wriedt.
