Kingborough Council and the Channel Museum are partnering to present a commemorative exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the devastating 1967 Tasmanian bushfires.
Acting Mayor Christian Street said the exhibition will open at the Kingborough Community Hub on Friday, 5 February 2027.
“Sixty years on, the 1967 bushfires remain one of the most significant events in the history of our community, and it is important that we preserve and share the stories of those who lived through it,” Cr Street said.
“This exhibition will honour the experiences of survivors, families and communities affected by the fires, while helping future generations understand the lasting impact of this major event.
“Council are calling on community members to share their personal experiences as part of a video interview series, which will be on display at the exhibitions.
“Personal stories bring history to life and help preserve our important local history,” Cr Street said
“We are encouraging anyone who experienced the fires, was involved in the recovery effort or has a family connection to the event to share their memories.
“Stories will be respectfully filmed for inclusion in the exhibition by member of the Youth Action Kingborough group (YAK), ensuring these experiences can be preserved and shared with the wider community.”
In addition to stories, Council is also seeking artefacts, photographs and memorabilia related to the 1967 bushfires for inclusion in the carefully curated display.
“Whether it is photographs, personal keepsakes, newspaper clippings, documents or other artefacts, each contribution can help build a meaningful record of this significant chapter in our region’s history.
“This exhibition is open to everyone and will provide an opportunity for reflection, learning and remembrance as we mark this significant anniversary together,” Cr Street said.
Community members interested in contributing artefacts or sharing their story are encouraged to contact Council’s Community Services team by calling 6211 8200 or emailing kc@kingborough.tas.gov.au
