Kingborough Council endorsed the proposed name ‘Defend the Island Way’ for the section of road connecting Kingston View Drive and the roundabout at Lightwood Crescent at its meeting on 3 August, while also supporting consultation with key sporting organisations on potential names for the ovals within Kingborough Sporting precinct.
Acting Mayor Christian Street said Council had agreed to formally submit the name of the section of road to the Place Names Tasmania for consideration.
“The road name which was submitted by Tasmanian JackJumpers provides access to the new JackJumpers and Jewels High-Performance Centre,” Cr Street said.
“Defend the Island has become much more than a slogan.
“It is a rallying call that brings communities together and helps build support for Tasmania’s sporting community.
“The naming proposal marks another milestone in the continued development of the precinct, which is set to become home to a range of community and elite sporting facilities.
“The section of Twin Ovals Road not affected by the proposed name change would become part of Gormley Drive and be sealed as part of the AFL High Performance Centre project.
Acting Mayor, Christian Street said Council would consult with the Tasmanian Devils Football Club on a possible name for the section of the road leading to their new training centre.
“As part of the precinct’s ongoing development, Kingborough Council is also inviting key sporting organisations to help shape the future identity of the ovals in the precinct.
“The Tasmania Football Club (Tasmania Devils), Kingborough District Cricket Club and Kingborough Tigers Football Club will be invited to submit proposed names for the ovals that will serve as their respective home grounds within the precinct.
“This gives the sporting groups the opportunity to help create a stronger sense of place and ownership by proposing names for their home grounds.
“The current naming approach is also potentially confusing, as the numbering of the ovals does not follow a clear or logical sequence.
“These clubs have helped build the reputation and success of the Kingborough Sports Precinct over many years,” Cr Street said.
“The names chosen will become part of the precinct’s story for generations to come, so it’s important they reflect the identity and aspirations of the sporting organisations and communities that use these facilities.
Council will consider the proposed oval names at a future meeting.
