Kingborough residents aged 60 and over are invited to enjoy a unique blend of learning and conversation at the upcoming Pop-Up Café Neil the Seal on Friday, 11 September at the Kingborough Community Hub.
Acting Mayor Christian Street said the popular intergenerational Pop-Up Café series provided opportunities for older residents to come together, connect with others and enjoy engaging presentations on topics of community interest.
“Guests will enjoy coffee, tea and light refreshments prepared by young baristas-in-training as part of a ‘Get Ready for Work’ course,” Cr Street said.
“The event will then feature a presentation by special guest speaker Dr Sophia Volzke from the University of Tasmania.
“It’s very much a two-way street; older residents enjoy an engaging social experience, while young people gain real-world workplace skills and meaningful connections with older generations.
“Dr Volzke will share the fascinating story of Neil the Seal, the southern elephant seal who has captured hearts across Tasmania and around the world and the role of science in understanding and protecting Tasmania’s marine wildlife.
“Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Neil’s backstory, why he keeps returning to Tasmania, and the science behind some of his most memorable and mischievous antics.
“As always, there will be plenty of time for questions and conversation, helping to create the warm and welcoming atmosphere that our Pop-Up Café events are known for,” Cr Street said.
