As winter comes to an end and the warmer weather encourages new growth, Council’s Turf Maintenance Team has commenced its annual spring maintenance program across Kingborough’s recreation grounds.
Acting Mayor Christian Street said the works are an important part of preparing local sports grounds for the busy summer season.
“Spring is a busy time for turf maintenance and helps ensure our sporting grounds are in the best possible condition for the months ahead,” Cr Street said.
“Following the winter football and soccer seasons, our ovals require a range of treatments to restore surface quality, encourage healthy grass growth and maintain safe playing conditions for users.
“Our crews are currently undertaking aeration works to relieve soil compaction and improve the movement of air, water and nutrients through the soil profile.
“This process involves coring or spiking the surface to alleviate compaction and create space for roots to grow and improve overall turf health.
“A top dressing of sand is then applied to improve drainage, support seed germination and create a more even playing surface.
“By carrying out this maintenance now, we’re helping ensure our sporting grounds remain safe and ready for the summer sports season.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while works are underway and encourage residents and sporting groups to observe any temporary closures and signage.”
The spring turf maintenance program will be carried out at sports grounds across Kingborough, including Taroona, Kingston, Kingston Beach, Blackmans Bay, Margate, Snug, Sandfly, Kettering, Woodbridge and Bruny Island.
