Plastic bag contamination in recycling bins is a significant issue in Kingborough.

Some residents place recyclable items such as empty bottles, cardboard, and paper into plastic bags before disposing of them in the yellow recycling bin.

When recycling is placed in plastic bags, the entire bin’s contents may be sent to landfill, undoing the effort to recycle responsibly.

Students are invited to get creative and design artwork for a KWS recycling truck that highlights the message that plastic bags don’t belong in the recycling bin.

The competition closed on Friday, 26 September 2025.

The winners will be announced during National Recycling Week in November.

Artwork guidelines:

  • Artwork should be created A4 landscape in size
  • Bright, bold, and colourful artwork will reproduce best on the truck
  • Use strong coloured textas, paint or pencils
  • Digital submissions are accepted if they are entirely original creations
  • The recycling message should be well reflected in the artwork: Leave your recycling loose! Don’t put any plastic bags in your recycling bin
