Nordic Walking

Positive Ageing Event

Kingborough Council’s Positive Ageing Program invites older residents to a free introductory Nordic Walking session at Snug Community Hall on Wednesday, 2 May from 10.30am to 12pm.

The Healthy Connections program held in Snug over February and March by Council was a great way to find out about a range of health enhancing activities, as well as ways to maintain better health as we get older.

Discussions throughout the sessions included managing arthritis, preventing falls and the health benefits of social interaction – catching up with people and sharing a laugh or talking over a tragedy. One of the most beneficial activities we can all share is walking, although it is not always so easy for some of us.

Nordic Walking is a low-impact exercise that uses the upper body as well as the legs and hips, and provides stability for those of us who may be less steady on our feet. This way of walking uses poles combined with a particular stride or technique which reduces pressure on the lower body, making walking a lot easier. By using the upper body when walking, the load is spread across more muscle groups and enables a longer stride. Nordic Walking helps to promote correct gait and posture, improves stability and provides the great benefits for health, wellness and fitness of all ages and fitness levels.

Participants will be taught the basics of Nordic Walking and the area around Snug Community Hall offers the perfect headquarters for an introductory session. It has grass, sand, bitumen and gravel just outside the doors, so walkers get to try the poles on a variety of surfaces. Bookings are essential for this activity; please contact Council’s Community Development Officer on (03) 6211 8170.
