The community desire for a kerbside green waste collection service was ratified during the strategy consultation as this being highlighted as the number 1 community priority with 75% of respondents wanting a green waste collection and 54% wanting a kerbside food organics service. Additionally, a recent petition attracted 111 signatures also calling for the implementation of a green waste service. These were ignored in the recent decision against the service, which was a dereliction of the duty of councillors to represent community interests.
Interestingly this service can also meet the needs of the minority within the opt-out provisions allowing those who do not desire to pay for the service to be able to do so. In light of this, no arguments related to the “environment of low wages growth and increases in costs of living” is sound, as 1 opt-out criterion was to allow for a financial inability.
