Roaming cats in our bushland and coastal areas

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt reminded everyone that cats were not allowed in many of our reserves and coastal areas.

“Here in Kingborough we are fortunate to live near many special areas that are home to unique wildlife,” Cr Wriedt said.

“These areas that are home to unique wildlife which is the reason cats are not allowed in them.

“These include Boronia Beach, Algona, Coffee Creek, Peter Murrell, Tinderbox Hills, Conningham and Snug Tiers reserves.

“It also includes all of our beaches and coastal reserves.

“These areas are protected under the Cat Management Act 2009.

“Protecting these special areas from the impacts of cats will only happen with your help.

“In Kingborough, it is estimated that each year at least 630,000 native animals are killed by domestic cats alone.

“Roaming pet cats, when they live near bushland and reserves, can have a major impact on local or fragmented populations of our rare or threatened species, such as bandicoots, quolls and potoroos.

“At night, southern-brown bandicoots frequent the coastal bush of Blackmans Bay and just one regular roaming pet cat can wipe out a local population.
