On Friday, 16 May, Kingborough Council hosted a community event at Dru Point Park in Margate as part of National Road Safety Week.
The event aimed to raise awareness about road safety and encourage responsible driving.
Mayor, Paula Wriedt highlighted the importance of this initiative, with the theme of “Pledge to drive so others survive”, which aligns closely with Council’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and pedestrian access.
“Kingborough manages a large road network with 271 km of sealed roads and 266 km of unsealed roads, making road safety a key priority for the community,” Cr Wriedt said.
“The event at Dru Point Park featured interactive activities, including a children’s bike path where attendees could learn about road rules and signage in a fun, hands-on way.
“Walking remains one of the most popular recreational activities in Kingborough, with residents consistently highlighting the importance of safe, accessible pathways and active transport options to connect communities and support healthy lifestyles.
“This event will promote safe and respectful use of these paths, highlighting simple guidelines for sharing pathways with cyclists, pedestrians, mobility users and dog walkers.”
Council has recently installed new signage which feature four simple guidelines:
• Keep to the left side of the path
• Cyclists should slow down and give a warning when approaching
• Move off the path when stopped
• Dogs must be on leads and under control
“These signs have been placed along the shared path between Spring Farm and the Kingston Wetlands,” Cr Wriedt said.
National Road Safety Week ran from May 11 to 18.
