Kingborough Council is trialling a new soft plastics recycling collection point at the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre.
“This will provide our community with an easy way to recycle items that can’t go in household recycling bins,” Cr Wriedt said.
“Soft plastics are one of the most challenging items to recycle.
“By working with partners like RecycleSmart, we’re able to give these materials a second life and reduce our community’s environmental footprint.
“Since the supermarkets suspended their soft plastic in-store collection points in 2022, the community has had no option but to throw soft plastics into the bin.
Residents can now drop off a range of soft plastics (plastics that can be easily scrunched) including:
• Biscuit packaging
• Bread bags
• Bubble wrap
• Chocolate wrappers
• Cling wrap
• Confectionery packets
• Document sleeves
• Plastic film
• Plastic sachets
• Post satchels
• Plastic bags
• Silver-lined chip bags
• Snaplock bags
• Squeeze pouches
• Pasta/Noodle packets
“The collected materials will be managed by RecycleSmart, who will process the plastics into new products, including oil and additives for asphalt.
“This is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to reduce waste and improve recycling options for residents.”
Residents are reminded to ensure their items are clean and dry before dropping them off, as wet, dirty, moldy items, organics, and biodegradable plastics can’t be recycled through this program.
