Kingborough Council unanimously endorsed the ‘Lift the Tone’ campaign, following a recent Council meeting.
The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) campaign aims to address the abuse and intimidation experienced by elected representatives and Council staff.
Mayor and LGAT Vice President, Paula Wriedt, said toxic behaviour, whether online or in public is never ok, debating ideas should never get personal or abusive.
“Our goal with this campaign is to encourage respectful dialogue, ensuring that while everyone has the right to express their views, elected representatives are treated with the respect they deserve,” Cr Wriedt said.
“Nearly 80% of Councillors report experiencing threats, primarily on social media in the past two years.
“This not only hurts individuals and families it damages our democracy.
“Fortunately, Kingborough Councillors do not experience as much abusive behaviour as some of the smaller Councils.
“Social media can be a harsh environment, where people often say things they would never say face-to-face, without considering the real impact of their comments.
“While the most common place to experience abuse is on social media, the campaign also sheds light on disturbing examples of harassment in public, including stalking, spitting, and nails thrown on driveways.
“It serves as a reminder that Councillors are like everyone else, and that freedom of speech should not be used to harm others.
“We are asking the public to join our ‘Life the Tone’ campaign by signing the pledge and promote respectful public debate,” Cr Wriedt said.
