At its meeting on 21 July, Kingborough Council voted to send key planning documents to the Tasmanian Planning Commission.
This represents a major step towards Kingborough Council moving on to the statewide planning scheme for Tasmania.
These documents follow an extensive public consultation period on the Draft Local Provision Schedule (LPS), which ended in December 2024.
Included within the documents is a full report on the Draft LPS, acknowledging and responding to the representations received during the public engagement period.
Also included a statement about the State Planning Provisions (SPPs) and a full copy of all representations received by council during the process.
Mayor Paula Wriedt welcomed the decision, saying it was a positive step that allows the draft plan to move to the next stage, public hearings.
“I strongly encourage all representors to attend the public hearings hosted by the Planning Commission,” Cr Wriedt said.
“The Planning Commission will contact all the representors with an invitation to attend the hearings.
“This is where the residents get to explain what it is they concerned about with the Draft LPS and how it may affect them and their community.
“Hearings will be held in Hobart, Kingston and on Bruny Island, it is expected they may start late August 2025.
“There were over 600 representations received by Council during the exhibition period.
“The public exhibition period ran from 9 October to 9 December 2024 and was promoted through a mix of social media, newspaper advertising, media releases, emails, dedicated webpage, public information sessions and one-on-one consultations, both during work hours and after.
“Both reports will now be provided to the Tasmanian Planning Commission and will inform discussions at the upcoming public hearings.”
The reports will be accompanied by a summary of the key matters and concerns raised by the elected members during the Council Meeting.
