As the weather warms and grass growth accelerates, Council’s Turf Maintenance Team are carrying out scheduled maintenance across our sporting and recreation areas.
Mayor Paula Wriedt said the spring turf maintenance program prepares Kingborough’s sports grounds for the upcoming busy summer season.
“Spring is an important time for turf care,” Cr Wriedt said.
“Our grounds are heavily utilised during the winter months by various local sporting clubs, so we have a range of activities designed to restore surface quality and support healthy grass growth.
“Our Turf Maintenance crews are currently undertaking aeration to relieve soil compaction and improve water and nutrient absorption.
“This is carried out by coring or spiking, which removes small plugs of soil, creating pockets for air, water and nutrients.
“Top dressing is then applied, which includes a thin layer of sand spread over the surface to improve drainage, seed germination and levels the playing surface.
“By addressing compaction, nutrient deficiencies, and surface irregularities now, we’re ensuring our ovals are safe, resilient, and ready for the summer sports season.
“The scheduled maintenance aims to minimise disruptions.
“Residents and sporting groups are encouraged to be mindful of temporary oval closures and signage while works are underway.
“Turf maintenance will be carried out throughout Kingborough including Taroona, Kingston, Kingston Beach, Blackmans Bay, Margate, Snug, Sandfly, Kettering, Woodbridge and Bruny Island,” Cr Wriedt said.
