Kingborough Council will host a Free Green Waste Weekend at both the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre and the Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre on Saturday, 29 and Sunday, 30 November.
Mayor Paula Wriedt said the Free Green Waste Weekend gives residents the opportunity to clean up their gardens and tidy their properties by disposing of organic waste.
“The initiative supports our community’s efforts to reduce landfill and promote sustainable waste management,” Cr Wriedt said.
“We also know Kingborough is a bushfire-prone municipality, and the recent fires earlier this year are a stark reminder of that.
“We are inviting residents to take advantage of the Free Green Waste Weekend to clear vegetation around their properties.
“As the Tasmania Fire Service highlighted earlier this year, it is never too late to reduce your risk by removing overgrown vegetation, clearing gutters, and removing highly flammable shrubs located close to your home.
“Green waste must be completely free of contaminants, including general waste, hazardous materials, plastics, and declared weeds.”
The green waste area is strictly for green waste only, general waste must not be disposed of in this area.
A limit of five cubic metres per household applies, and green waste must not exceed 300mm in diameter.
Commercial operators will be charged standard rates.
The Free Green Waste Weekend will run on Saturday, 29 and Sunday, 30 November at:
- Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre 9am to 4pm.
- Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre 8am to 3:30pm.
