In celebration of National Recycling Week, Council announced the winners of the 2025 Recycling Truck Art Competition.
Mayor Paula Wriedt congratulated Maybelle from St Aloysius Catholic College and Charlie from Mount Nelson Primary School (Kingborough resident) and for their winning designs, which have been printed on the sides of a Kingborough recycling truck to promote the message that recyclable items should be placed loose in recycling bins, not tied up in plastic bags.
“Congratulations to Charlie and Maybelle for your beautiful designs, which will soon be seen travelling all over Kingborough,” Cr Wriedt said.
“This competition was an excellent way for students to use their creativity to educate the community about good recycling habits and reinforce the message that plastic bags don’t belong in recycling bins.
“Unfortunately, plastic bag contamination in recycling bins is a significant issue in Kingborough.
“People often place empty bottles, cardboard, paper and other recyclables into plastic bags before putting them into the yellow recycling bin.
“When this happens, the bag is mistaken for rubbish and ends up in landfill, undoing their good recycling efforts.
“This competition was open to Kingborough primary school students, aged 4 to 12 years, and was a fun way for students have their artwork showcased throughout the municipality,” Cr Wriedt said.
Four runners-up Charlotte, Aria, Ethan and Laura were also recognised for their artwork, with all six students receiving $50 gift vouchers for their entries.
