Upgrades to the Dru Point Playground in Margate were recently completed, ready for the summer school holidays.
Mayor Paula Wriedt said the much-loved existing wooden ship had undergone many repairs over the years, but the timber was starting to deteriorate from the ground up.
“It was time for the old ship to retire and make way for brand-new play equipment for families to enjoy,” Cr Wriedt said.
“The new ship was built and installed by a Tasmanian playground specialist, and features a vibrant rubber soft-fall surface decorated with sea creatures surrounding the vessel.
“Inclusive access points and ramps now connect the ship to land, ensuring children of all abilities can enjoy the new play space.
“Dru Point Playground is well loved by the community, and has seen a number of upgrades over the years.
“In 2023, Council replaced some of the equipment designed for older children with a double flying fox, netting hammock swing, and Orbit rope climbing frame.
“The children’s bike path, complete with stop signs, traffic lights, and intersections, is always buzzing with kids riding bikes and scooters.
“I’m delighted we’ve been able to refresh Dru Point to inspire even more creative play for now and into the future,” Cr Wriedt said.
