Free Green Waste Weekend

Kingborough Council is holding a Free Green Waste Weekend at both the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre and the Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre on Saturday, 21 and Sunday, 22 February.

Mayor Paula Wriedt said the upcoming Free Green Waste Weekend is a good chance for residents to spruce up their gardens and dispose of excess vegetation responsibly.

“This initiative helps our community cut down on landfill while encouraging greener, more sustainable waste practices,” Cr Wriedt said.

“We are also very mindful that Kingborough is highly vulnerable to bushfires.

“The fires Tasmania experienced earlier this summer were a clear reminder of how important it is to stay prepared.

“We’re encouraging residents to use the Free Green Waste Weekend to remove vegetation and reduce potential fuel loads around their homes.

“The Tasmania Fire Service has stressed that it’s never too late to improve your property’s safety by clearing overgrown plants, cleaning gutters, and removing flammable shrubs close to buildings.

“It’s essential that all green waste is completely free from contaminants, this includes household rubbish, hazardous items, plastics, and any declared weeds.”

Council reminds the community that the green waste area is designated strictly for organic garden material only; general waste is not permitted in this area.

A limit of five cubic metres per household applies, and green waste must not exceed 300mm in diameter.

Commercial operators will be charged standard rates.

The Free Green Waste Weekend will run on Saturday, 21 and Sunday, 22 January at:

  • Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre 9am to 4pm.
  • Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre 8am to 3:30pm.
