Improving Rural Engagement

Kingborough Council is strengthening the way it engages with rural and semi‑rural communities to ensure residents have clear, accessible opportunities to be informed and have their say on Council projects, services and decisions that affect them.

Mayor Paula Wriedt said that at Council’s Annual General Meeting in December, community members called for improvements to how Council engaged with rural communities across the municipality.

“Community engagement plays a vital role in how Council communicates service changes and projects that affect our residents,” Cr Wriedt said.

“It’s important that we regularly review our approach to make sure our engagement methods are working and that we are reaching the people they need to reach.

Cr Wriedt said Council currently plans engagement activities with a focus on accessibility, timeliness and delivery through appropriate communication channels.

“This year, Council will explore new approaches to enhance how we engage with our community, while also promoting the different ways residents can share their questions and ideas with us,” Cr Wriedt said.

“Community members can get more engaged with Council by asking questions and raising matters of interest or concern, either at Council meetings or directly with Council.

“Council meetings are open to the public and livestreamed on YouTube, making it easier for residents to follow discussions and participate even if they cannot attend in person.

“Residents are welcome to attend Council meetings and ask questions during the open session, or submit Questions on Notice ahead of a meeting, allowing Council to provide considered responses,” Cr Wriedt said.

“Council also operates the Kingborough Community Forum, an important engagement setting for sharing information, distributing surveys, raising significant issues and receiving feedback on Council priorities, initiatives and emerging matters affecting the municipality.

“The forum is open to Kingborough community groups and meets regularly to hear Council updates and provide community input.

Residents can also contact Council at any time by emailing kc@kingborough.tas.gov.au or calling 6211 8200 to ask questions, seek information, lodge a request for service or raise an issue requiring Council attention.
