Walking and cycling grows across key Kingborough routes

New data shows more people in Kingborough are choosing to walk and ride, with a significant increase recorded in active travel recorded across key local routes.

Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt shared the results from the 2025 Super Sunday Recreation Count, conducted by Bicycle Network, representing a 15% increase compared with 2024.

“The recent results highlight a growing shift towards active travel, which is helping to support a more connected and accessible community,” Cr Wriedt said.

“More people are using our paths to stay active and get around.

“The busiest site surveyed was the Balmoral Road and Beach Road area at Kingston Beach, where 668 trips were recorded over the three hour count period, an increase of 58 per cent to last year.

“The Whitewater Creek Track has nearly doubled its users in two years.”

The Super Sunday Recreation Count is conducted annually and provides valuable insight into how people use walking and cycling infrastructure across the municipality.

“Reliable, long-term data allows Council to plan and invest in infrastructure to support that demand,” Cr Wriedt said.

“By enabling safe, accessible and well-connected routes, we can continue to encourage people to choose active travel as part of their daily lives.”
