Sandfly Road Shoulder Improvements

Kingborough Council recently completed the shoulder upgrades along Sandfly Road, delivering important road safety improvements on a key rural route.

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the improvements widen and improve road shoulders on priority uphill sections to create safer conditions for cyclists and other vulnerable road users in the rural community.

“Sandfly Road is a well used route for local residents, commuters and recreational cyclists,” Cr Wriedt said.

“Improving shoulder width and consistency helps provide a safer space for cyclists, enhances visibility, and reduces the risk of conflict between vehicles and more vulnerable road users.

“The Sandfly Road project was recently completed with the line marking being applied last week,” Cr Wriedt said.

Alison Hetherington from Bicycle Network Tasmania said the sealed road shoulders make it safer for all road users, providing extra space for people riding and drivers to regain control when their car veers out of the lane.

“They are an essential element of safer roads so it’s great to see Kingborough Council retrofitting these where needed,” Ms Hetherington said,

The upgrades have been funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Safer Rural Roads Program, with $400,000 provided by the State Government and $100,000 contributed by Kingborough Council.
