Budget Priorities for Waste and Recycling

Kingborough Council is continuing to invest in a cleaner, more sustainable future, with the 2026–27 Budget delivering significant funding to strengthen waste and resource recovery across the municipality.

Acting Mayor Christian Street said the 26/27 Budget included more than $6.3 million for waste and recovery supporting Kingborough as it grows.

“A key component of the waste budget includes $2.3 million for kerbside waste collection,” Cr Street said.

“Alongside general kerbside waste services, the budget allocates $1.03 million for recycling and $950,000 for FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) collection.

“These services play a vital role in reducing the waste that ends up in landfill.

“During the last financial year, 1,870 tonnes of recycling was diverted from landfill and processed into new products and materials.

“Kingborough’s FOGO services also diverted 2,700 tonnes of organic waste from landfill.

“The budget also includes $325,000 for public litter bins across Kingborough and the Channel, and $259,000 for litter collection on Bruny Island, supporting more than 400 public waste and recycling bins, with weekly collections and daily servicing in high-use areas.

“These services also help keep public spaces clean, maintaining the amenity of parks, streets and coastal areas for residents.

“Council-run facilities, such as the Bruny Island Transfer Station and the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre, ensure that all parts of the municipality have access to safe and convenient waste disposal.

“This budget reflects Council’s commitment to delivering essential services while supporting sustainability outcomes across Kingborough,” Cr Street said.
