New kerbside collection trucks roll out across Kingborough

Kingborough’s new fleet of kerbside collection trucks are now operating across the municipality, delivering enhanced safety features.

Acting Mayor Christian Street said the upgraded trucks formed part of Council’s recent contract extension with Veolia to provide Kingborough’s kerbside waste collection service for another seven years.

Acting Mayor Christian Street, Veolia driver Michael Cook and Veolia Tasmania Southern Regional Manager Chris Dickinson.

“It’s great to see the new trucks on our roads across Kingborough, equipped with advanced safety technology and artificial intelligence (AI) systems,” Cr Street said.

“During bin collection, there is a risk that people, particularly children, may move too close to a bin while it is being emptied.

“To help reduce this risk, the new trucks are fitted with AI-powered cameras and sensors that can detect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists entering the collection zone during bin servicing.

“If a person enters the collection zone, the system automatically stops the bin-lifting arm and alerts both the driver and the individual nearby.

“Veolia is the first waste collection company in Tasmania to introduce this technology, and we are pleased to see these innovative safety features being implemented in Kingborough,” Cr Street said.

Veolia Tasmania Southern Regional Manager Chris Dickinson said Veolia is proud to partner with Kingborough Council to continue supporting the local community.

“This new technology adds another important layer of safety to protect vulnerable road users and our team,” Mr Dickinson said.
