Seniors Week Information Sessions – Bruny Island

Understanding the My Aged Care system and Eating for Life may not seem to be related topics but when the theme is ageing well and maintaining independence, you can see a clear connection.   Council of the Ageing (COTA) is taking a trip to Bruny for Seniors Week to provide information sessions on these two important topics relevant to older people.

If you are having trouble navigating the My Aged Care system for yourself or for someone you are caring for, the Aged Care Know How session will share advice and give an opportunity for questions to be answered. The session aims to help people feel confident in knowing how to use the system.

The Aged Care Know How Program being presented on Bruny is focused on supporting the choice to age at home by providing step-by-step information and personalised advice. You can get the “know how” to navigate the help-at-home options for yourself or for someone you are caring for.  Following the Aged Care Know How session, COTA will present their Eat for Life session which looks at how nutritional requirements change as we age and provides ideas to keep food interesting and for helping us maintain good health.

In an effort to improve health outcomes, the University of Tasmania will be offering free screening trial screenings for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) at the afternoon sessions.  AF is associated with a five times increased risk of stroke and is responsible for 25% of strokes in older adults. Approximately 250 strokes a year in Tasmania are due to AF. However, AF tends to have no symptoms, and many people with the disorder are unaware, have not been diagnosed or receive no treatment at all. Come along and have a free screening at the Seniors Week event

The session will run from 1pm to 4pm on Monday 15 October in the Jane Finn Room at the Bruny Island Health Centre in Alonnah.
