Beach Watch Results

Council is committing to extending the extensive testing regime at Kingston Beach and Blackmans Bay Beach for the remainder of summer. We will be open and transparent with the water quality results we receive each week, and they will be published here.

Sample results taken Thursday, 10 January 2019

The retesting results for Kingborough beaches have returned with excellent results, meaning the advice against swimming at the northern end of Blackmans Bay beach has been lifted.

The source of the high reading earlier in the week is unknown and Council has called on the State Government to investigate – Blackmans Bay beach reopens but questions remain.

Council will remain open and transparent with the water quality results, and the extensive water sampling regime will continue throughout summer.

Sample results taken Tuesday, 8 January 2019

  • Water quality readings at the northern end of Blackmans Bay Beach are unusually high this week and swimming is not advised. This is in addition to our existing warnings against swimming at Blackmans Bay south. Results show an elevated level of faecal contamination along the entire beach and 11 signs have been placed along the beach advising the public that swimming is not recommended.

Council has retested the water quality and results will be known tomorrow afternoon. Council will publish the updates as soon as they are received.

The Mayor of Kingborough has release a media release calling for action on water quality issues across the Derwent. Read the full release: Statement from Mayor Winter.

The higher readings suggest contamination may be coming from other sources apart from stormwater, which was found to be an issue at Blackmans Bay South. The water quality at Blackmans Bay South was rated poor in the long-term rating from the Department of Health last year. TasWater has been carrying out investigations and have made a number of repairs. Since repair work was completed recreational water quality results were improving at Blackmans Bay South, up until we experienced heavy rainfall in late December. Higher rainfall is known to impact water quality results.

Council has informed the Environment Protection Authority and is continuing to work with TasWater to investigate potential sources of contamination.

Various beaches in Hobart and Clarence are also being retested due to higher readings this week. Due to widespread water quality issues, Kingborough Council is approaching the State Government for assistance.

All water quality readings for the Derwent, are published on the Derwent Estuary Program website. Please check here for the #BeachWatch updates.
