National Tree Day

This year, Kingborough Council will host a community planting day on National Tree Day in Apollo Bay, Bruny Island.

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said this year, National Tree Day would be held on Sunday the 30 July from 10am-2pm at D’Entrecasteaux Drive, Apollo Bay, Bruny Island.

“For many years Kingborough Council has held community planting events for National Tree Day, this will be the first one on Bruny Island,” Cr Wriedt said.

“Over the past 15 years, the community assisted by Council have planted over 18,000 plants on National Tree Day to restore local ecosystems.

“National Tree Day is such a great way for everyone to meet new friends and contribute to a better future for Kingborough and it is exciting that we are having a community planting day on Bruny this year.

“This year’s planting will help connect the coastal reserve to the forested hillside, allowing the safe passage of many of the local animals.

“The white gums in the area are home to the local forty-spotted pardalote colony and the blue and black gums provide habitat for the swift parrots.

“Bruny Island is one of the last places that these birds are continuing to thrive.

“The forty-spotted pardalotes have continued to decline on mainland Tasmania so it is important that we support and protect their habitats as much as we can.

“This is a great family friendly event and always a fun day out in nature.

“Come along and join the thousands of people around the country for the greatest planting day in the community calendar.”

Everything you need is provided including hot drinks and food, all you need to do is wear good solid shoes and clothes that can get dirty.

Gardening gloves will be provided please but feel free to bring your own.

The planting site is on D’Entrecasteaux Drive, follow the signs to the planting site.

The planting starts at 10 am and goes until 2pm. It is a 10 min drive to the planting site from the ferry terminal with a number of ferry time slots available beforehand.
