Blackmans Bay community planting

Kingborough Council is partnering with the Blackmans Bay Community Association (BBCA) and Blackmans Bay Landcare (BBL) to support a local tree planting event.

The event runs from 9am to 12noon on Saturday, 30 August in the Amethyst Drive Reserve.

Mayor Paula Wriedt said Kingborough is fortunate to have many wonderful volunteer groups who help make a real difference.

“Along with Amethyst Drive, BBL helps care for a number of natural areas reserves in Blackmans Bay, including Blackmans Bay beach and Mary Knoll Reserve,” Cr Wriedt said

“To support the event, Council is donating 200 native plants, all grown in Council’s nursery with the help of our dedicated volunteers.

“The event forms part of the ongoing collaboration between Council and the wider Kingborough Landcare Network.

“The plants comprise of a mix of grasses, ground covers, and shrubs, and will be planted beneath the canopy of existing Eucalypts to reflect the original woodland of Blackmans Bay.

“Using local species ensures the plants thrive while restoring lost habitat.

“Kingborough has many small green spaces created through past subdivisions.

“These ‘pocket’ reserves may be modest, but they play a big role in supporting local wildlife and threatened plant species, helping pollination, reducing the effect of rising temperatures, and offering peaceful spots for recreation.

“As our community grows, these natural areas become even more valuable for both people and nature.

“The event is a wonderful follow up to Council’s National Tree Planting Day, where over 169 volunteers put on the gloves to plant along the Snug foreshore,” Cr Wriedt said.

The groups welcome the community to get involved and to RSVP by emailing bbca7052@gmail.com.
