National Tree Day 2026 goes to Bruny

Kingborough Council is inviting the community to get involved in this year’s National Tree Day event, taking place on Sunday 26 July at Apollo Bay on North Bruny Island.

The free, family-friendly event will run from 10am to 2pm and will bring together volunteers to plant around 1,000 native plants, helping to strengthen an important bushland corridor linking coastal and inland habitats.

Acting Mayor, Christian Street said the corridor played a vital role in supporting wildlife movement and protecting biodiversity in one of Tasmania’s most significant natural areas.

“Bruny Island is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot and is home to all 12 of Tasmania’s endemic bird species, including the critically endangered forty-spotted pardalote and swift parrot,” Cr Street said.

“The event builds on more than 15 years of community planting in Kingborough, with restoration efforts visible from Taroona and Longley to Kettering and Bruny Island.

“Locally sourced native plants, grown at Council’s nursery, will be used on the day to provide long-term habitat and shelter for native birds and wildlife.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, with guided walks, environmental displays, children’s activities and a free BBQ creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all ages.

“Participants need to come prepared for a day spent outside with sturdy footwear and warm, weather-appropriate clothing including a raincoat, as the site includes uneven and sloping ground.

“All planting equipment is provided, and gloves can be borrowed if needed.”

The event is supported by a range of local organisations, including the Bruny Island Men’s Shed, Bruny Island Community Association, Bruny Island Environment Network, Inala and the Friends of North Bruny.

While bookings are not essential, they are encouraged to assist with catering.

The site is located at Apollo Bay, with access from D’Entrecasteaux Drive. Parking will be available nearby, and signage will be in place to guide visitors.

For those travelling from the mainland, further information on ferry services is available via SeaLink Bruny Island.
