  • Co-mingled (plastic bottles and milk cartons)

The kerbside recycling collected in Kingborough is transported to the Cleanaway recycling facility at Lutana for sorting and baling for transport to the mainland for sale to recycling manufacturers.

Glass which is separated from the other recyclables and transported to Hazell Brothers at HBMI Leslie Vale for crushing and re-use in road base material, bricks and road construction.

Approximately 8% of materials that are processed at the Lutana facility are sent to landfill. These contaminated materials are primarily plastic bags, nappies, building materials and organic matter that are not suitable for recycling at the plant.

General Waste

Customers enter and leave via the toll booth and weighbridges, where their vehicle is weighed. Customers must pay either a minimum charge or the cost based on the weight difference of their vehicle (in versus out). Charges apply.

The general refuse disposal area is made up of eight bays.  Customers can dispose of their waste which will drop on to the walking floor.  The 25 metre walking floor takes half an hour to move from one end of the bays to the other end where the compactor is located. KWS staff work at the middle of the walking floor and recover items suitable for recycling or resale in the Re-Use Shop to reduce further items going to landfill.

A compactor is located at the end of the walking floor and compresses the waste as it slowly fills up.  Transport trailers are attached to the compactor and use a ‘live weigh’ system which provides accurate readings to ensure maximum loads are reached before transporting to the landfill site at Copping.  Ensuring maximum loads are reached each time the truck is ready to leave helps reduce transport costs.  More information on the operations of the landfill site at Copping can be found on the website, Southern Waste Solutions.

Soft Plastics Recycling Trial

Kingborough Council has launched a trial soft plastics recycling collection point at the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre.

This initiative provides the community with a convenient way to recycle soft plastics—items that cannot be placed in household recycling bins. Soft plastics have long been one of the most difficult materials to recycle, and this new drop-off option helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill.

In partnership with RecycleSmart, the collected materials will be processed into new products, including oil and additives used in asphalt production. This partnership supports Council’s ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and expand local recycling options.

✅ What Can Be Recycled

Residents can now drop off a wide range of soft plastics, including:

    • Biscuit packaging

    • Bread bags

    • Bubble wrap

    • Chocolate wrappers

    • Cling wrap

    • Confectionery packets

    • Document sleeves

    • Plastic film

    • Plastic sachets

    • Post satchels

    • Plastic bags

    • Silver-lined chip bags

    • Snaplock bags

    • Squeeze pouches

    • Pasta/noodle packets
