Upgrades to Kingston Roads – Huon Highway

Council will be closing Huon Highway off from the traffic lights at the intersection of the Channel Highway and Huon Highway near the Kingston Hotel to the Kingston Bypass to conduct work on building a pedestrian underpass under Huon Highway.

WHERE:

WHEN:

This section of the road will be closed from Saturday 9 July until 9 August 2022.

Council has coordinated this closure to begin at the start of the school holidays to try and minimize traffic disruption.

This section of the Huon Highway will be closed – instead of leaving open with traffic management because:

  • Shorter period of inconvenience (it would take 3 months of road works and disruption if the road is not closed)
  • Cost effective – saving money; and
  • Improved safety for all working on site.

Alternative Routes in and out of Kingston:

Council has created some alternative movement maps for anyone wondering how they can enter and leave Kingston with this section of the roads being closed, see below and which way you want to travel.

From Hobart to Kingston

To Hobart from Kingston

From Huonville to Kingston

To Huonville from Kingston

To Blackmans Bay from Kingston

Information will be communicated to our community through our website, FaceBook and local media. Should anyone have any queries about the closure or wish to talk to the project manager for the work please contact Council on 6211 8200 or email kc@kingborough.tas.gov.au

WHY:

The road will be closed to allow the installation of the new pedestrian underpass linking Kingston Park to the Kingston Wetlands, opening up more connections and creating safer pedestrian movement. See below drop downs for more information on upgrades to Kingston CBD.

Vision for Kingston

This upgrade is part of a larger upgrade to the CBD area in Kingston. The community have overwhelmingly told Council that they want Kingston to be a dynamic, thriving and connected place with more attractive green spaces and improved links for pedestrians and cyclists.

To make sure that the CBD can cope with new growth and investment, Council is improving all the road and pathway connections in the CBD.

Goshawk Way, John Street – Huon Highway Junctions

Council is constructing the remaining section of Goshawk Way and building a roundabout on Huon Highway which will allow traffic to flow through from the new residential area behind Kingston Park to the highway.

The completion of Goshawk Way will provide another through-road for Kingston traffic that will ease some pressure on John Street and the Channel Highway.

The roundabout will be upgraded to become more visible and improve access for larger delivery vehicles to local businesses.

Further Upgrades to Kingston CBD

Council has created the Community Hub, Kingston Park (stage two almost finished) and is now working on improving the roads in the CBD to improve access for commuters, provide alternative transport options and attract investment and visitors to the area.

The work on Kingston Park Stage 2 is almost finished and will provide a fantastic public open space with upgraded pathways along Whitewater Creek, a pedestrian underpass between Kingston Park and the Kingston Wetlands, an upgraded and more visible roundabout at John Street and a new through-road (Goshawk Way) that can be accessed via a new roundabout on the Huon Highway.

Later this year Council will be transforming the main street of Kingston, Channel Highway, into an attractive and inviting destination, improving the retail and commercial experiences for residents and visitors.

After consulting with the community, Council voted on Concept 1 Design at a Council Meeting on 4 April 2022. The design allows for future growth and represents contributions made by the wider community including cyclists, people with disabilities, pedestrians, businesses and other commuters.
